DESHBANDHU LIBRARY

INTRODUCTION

It can be said without any exaggeration that the Deshbandhu Library is the richest reference library in Central India. It is also, perhaps, the biggest library in the non-governmental sector in Chhattisgarh. The Raipur-based library has some 30,000 books on a variety of subjects and more than 60,000 reference dockets covering a whole range of topics. The library has three separate sections- a) book library, b) research & documentation centre and c) public reading room & children’s library. The library caters to the needs of various groups- book-lovers, media persons & other visitors from the state and out-of-state visitors, civil society organisations, social activists, political parties and persons, cultural activists, students, researchers, government departments, national & international agencies, and diplomatic missions etc.

Efforts are afoot to make Deshbandhu Library more user-friendly and upgrade it to meet the changing needs of the visitors. This task is being accomplished with the support of National foundation of India, New Delhi. A grant from NFI has enabled us not only in air-conditioning and computerisation of the library, but also in making it more systematic and focused. We hope that very soon a complete list of all the reference material would be made available on-line, thus giving ready accessibility to Internet  users. Similarly, one would be able to browse a full list of the books in the library on-line. As we are planning, it might also become  possible for the members to borrow books from other libraries in India through a networking arrangement.

As of now, members can make use of the library from 11.00 a.m. to 07.00 p.m. The air-conditioned members’ corner can seat up to eight persons at a time.Membership is available on daily, monthly and yearly basis. (Student members are entitled to concession in the fees). A competent staff consisting of a research & reference editor and three assistant librarians attends to their requirements.
